Those of us sent away to school to suffer years of homesickness, psychological torture, bullying and sexual abuse, are obviously pleased that at last the penny has dropped.
But it is scandalous that the apology has taken so long. Two years ago, I wrote in the Mail of my experience of being sent to board, aged seven, at Hillstone School, Great Malvern in Worcestershire. At seven you are pitifully vulnerable. Some were sent at six or even younger, though most nowadays board for the first time in their early teens when they can cope better.
At my school, the headmaster Rudolf Barbour-Simpson, a local magistrate and a much-respected bigwig, was a sexual sadist. His wife was also a monster and the daughter of a headmaster of Harrow. When she discovered that her husband fancied one of us, and had been fiddling about with us, she would jealously punish his latest crush with tortures worthy of the Gestapo.
Many correspondents were Hillstone boys who told terrible stories – one of a former pupil committing suicide, and another of a rape by Barbour-Simpson which went unpunished.
