Buy Now Anyone who has experienced the death of a loved one and who has dealt with the pain of that experience by seeing a counselor or working through self-help workbooks will tell you that there are five stages of grief that you go through as you deal with this loss. One type of loss that all of us eventually experience is the loss of a romantic relationship that was very important to us. When we go through that experience, we go through those same stages of grief that we would go through if someone close to us had died.
With a relationship, the other person is still there for us to interact with at least theoretically; we may not actually be speaking to them. This complicates the traditional grief process because ongoing interaction can change the dynamics of the relationship and cause new patterns in dealing with the loss.

Sabbatum; dies sabbatinus, dies Sabbati; rarely feria septima, feria Sabbati [dies] dominica; History[ edit ] A continuous seven-day cycle that runs throughout history paying no attention whatsoever to the phases of the moon was probably first practiced in Judaism , dated to the 6th century BC at the latest. Friedrich Delitzsch and others suggested that the seven-day week being approximately a quarter of a lunation is the implicit astronomical origin of the seven-day week, and indeed the Babylonian calendar used intercalary days to synchronize the last week of a month with the new moon.
Tigay and others claimed that the sabbath is mentioned as a day of rest in some of the earliest layers of the Pentateuch dated to the 9th century BC at the latest, centuries before Judea ‘s Babylonian exile. They also find the resemblance between the biblical Sabbath and the Babylonian system to be weak.
Therefore, they suggested that the seven-day week may reflect an independent Israelite tradition. It is clear that among neighboring nations that were in position to have an influence over Israel — and in fact which did influence it in various matters — there is no precise parallel to the Israelite Sabbatical week. This leads to the conclusion that the Sabbatical week, which is as unique to Israel as the Sabbath from which it flows, is an independent Israelite creation. However the designation of the seven days of the week to the seven planets is an innovation introduced in the time of Augustus.
Ancient Near East[ edit ] The earliest evidence of an astrological significance of a seven-day period is connected to Gudea , priest-king of Lagash in Sumer during the Gutian dynasty , who built a seven-room temple, which he dedicated with a seven-day festival. In the flood story of the Assyro-Babylonian epic of Gilgamesh the storm lasts for seven days, the dove is sent out after seven days, and the Noah -like character of Utnapishtim leaves the ark seven days after it reaches firm ground.
On these days, officials were prohibited from various activities and common men were forbidden to “make a wish”, and at least the 28th was known as a “rest-day”. In a frequently-quoted suggestion going back to the early 20th century, the Hebrew Sabbath is compared to the Sumerian sa-bat “mid-rest”, a term for the full moon. Grief and bereavement Stage One: Shiva After the burial, the immediate mourners return to a home called the “shiva house,” to begin a seven day period of intense mourning. Shiva is from the word sheva, which means seven. This week is called “sitting shiva,” and is an emotionally and spiritually healing time where the mourners sit low, dwell together, and friends and loved ones come to comfort them with short visits referred to as “shiva calls.
All other loved ones are also mourned, but the observances of shiva do not apply. Ideally all of the direct mourners sit shiva in the house of the deceased, for it says, “Where a person lived, there does his spirit continue to dwell. But one may sit shiva in any home. Particularly, a home of one of the direct mourners will be filled with the spirit of the loved one who is now gone. Memories will come easily there, and part of the comfort of the week of shiva is sharing such memories.
It is best for mourners to move into the shiva house together for the week.

Courtesy Of Hubert Schriebl Ava Lynn Vercellone and David Bonanno So many forces keep Fun Home aloft that listing them threatens to emphasize the mechanical side instead of celebrating the exuberant emotional effect. The Tony Award-winning musical flies from joy to sorrow, explores themes of family dynamics and sexual identity, and innovates storytelling itself. It can be silly, and it can take your breath away. Weston’s production benefits from stellar performances by theater mainstays David Bonanno and Susan Haefner, who bring out complexities in their characters even as they make them soar.
The musical is based on the acclaimed graphic memoir Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic by Alison Bechdel, Vermont’s cartoonist laureate, who tells her own story of coming out just before she discovers her father’s denial of his own homosexuality. Alison’s new life starts just as her father’s ends, in suicide. Lisa Kron dramatized the memoir by relying on the musical genre’s fluid transitions from song to dance to speech. These shifts become leaps in time and space as Alison recalls her childhood with a father who was both hero and tyrant to her.
The contrast between her happiness in accepting her sexuality and her father’s misery in hiding his is handled with both humor and despair. Kron anchors the show around Alison’s impulse to understand her family.
Sheltered Circles Preschool was a nice little bubble in which we all existed. I was the school bus, the playground was smaller and the kids were fewer in number. My daughter didn’t have to deal with the big world of recess and its social dynamics. Well, then your kid gets bigger and has to deal with mean kids on the bus, and suddenly, the timeouts he got at preschool seems like a breeze.
You miss when you could keep the circle of injuries and headaches smaller, but dealing with adversity is the only way your kids will grow.

How could this happen? Where did it come from? Why does mental illness have to be so stigmatizing? Although her model outlines the coping process for the terminally ill, I believe the same logic applies equally well for sufferers of depression. Over the years, people have found solace knowing that acceptance, the fifth and final stage, is possible. Although depression is not a fatal diagnosis, for those suffering, thoughts of death will loom heavy.
Some may feel death has already arrived, floating through a worldly existence they no longer recognize. Less fortunate victims will see death as a way out, cutting their life short as a means to an end. During my own experience, I faced death everyday, secretly wishing it would come and take me away from such paralyzing sadness.
The start of November means it has been approximately three years since I experienced the first stages of depression.
